bullet-lrge.jpg Breeding Costs!

Why do purebred Siamese kittens cost so much?

There are many factors that affect the price of purebred cats, and having a small cattery. Responsible breeders put a LOT of money into their breeding program. This is usually not a profitable venture.

FYI a lot of the breeders today are mixing everything, so I am afraid the original Siamese breed may be lost. We are doing our best to keep them thriving.

A responsible breeder will spend from $1200-$2400+ on the breeding cats
that they purchase in order to get a cat from a reputable line with registration papers and breeding rights. Not all of these breeders work out  for one reason or another, and not all "So Called reputable catteries" guarantee or replace a breeder that doesn't work out (I learned this the hard way, losing thousands of dollars)
. We are always replacing and adding to the program.

Expensive premium cat food (wet & dry) (when pregnant & nursing queens eat 2 to 3 times more food) , supplements, tons of litter, scratching posts (cat condos) toys and vet bills for an entire cattery adds up very quickly. There are also advertising costs, cattery registration, and individual kitten/cat, and litter registration costs, and maintaining a website.

Hours of socializing a kitten and updating the website.

In virtually all litters there is at least one kitten who during his 12 weeks living with the breeder requires veterinary attention due to an umbilical infection, failure to thrive normally, getting poked in the eye, falling off a table the wrong way, developing an upper respiratory infection, developing a minor eye infection during the period when the eyes are starting to open, being born with a minor birth defect, developing a mysterious limp, swallowing a foreign object, or many other possible calamities. Kittens are like small human children. They have a talent for getting themselves into scrapes or picking up bugs. The veterinary costs typically vary from a $55 exam (to be on the safe side) to $300 emergency surgery or treatment (off-hours).

Our adult cats have full panel blood work and yearly vet wellness checks done before breeding them. Breeders also face unexpected vet bills such as
emergency C- sections, pyometra, etc.  As your cats age there are more expenses, teeth cleaning, basic maintenance costs.

Most people are not prepared to house an 'intact' male that sprays, and must then build special accommodations for him, or even more than one male, which can add up to a considerable expense.

We made a commitment to be there for out Cats & kittens, so this means missing family functions once in awhile. Vacations???? What are those?

Siamese are very energetic and when you have several there is a lot of property damage, broken items furniture destroyed etc.  Which have to be replaced or repaired. For chewed phone cords we finally got hollow plastic tubing, at Lowes.

All that said we LOVE raising healthy friendly Siamese, this is a wonderful breed and they have brought us many hours of love, smiles and true happiness.

They truly are our family and we wouldn't know what to do without them and the many many hours of joy.
